The Enteric Nervous System and Its Impact on your Brain

October 18, 2021

The Enteric Nervous System is a very important division of the central nervous system. It is responsible for controlling everything that goes on in your gastrointestinal system.  This system that runs from the esophagus to the rectum incorporates approximately 100 million neurons – a staggering number. As a matter of fact the spinal cord doesn’t even have this many neurons. What is miraculous about this system is the connection to the brain. There is constant communication through the nervous system itself, along with hormones. Have you ever gotten butterflies in your stomach, before something that was making you very nervous? The Enteric Nervous System is responsible for that sensation, and ultimately that feeling, and those feelings that result from the changes in this system impact the biochemistry in your brain. Your stomach, belly, gut, whatever you prefer to call it, because of this enteric nervous system, has much more to do with your overly body function, than just digestion. It has a true connection to the brain, your overall mental state, and diseases impacting your health.

There have been studies done over the centuries that address this stomach/brain connection. Whether it is scientists form 100s of years ago talking about poisons building in the gut which were linked to depression and even psychosis, to modern day scientists who have examined this link and found through experimentation with mice, when proper bacteria is not present in the stomach,  the results involve a lack of social effectiveness.

This connection between the digestive system, specifically how the nervous system is involved, and the brain certainly warrants deep consideration. It means making sure your digestive system works properly and efficiently through feeding your body the proper foods and nutrition, and other means such as Colon Hydrotherapy.
